• Project objectives and outputs

The main goal of the project was to form the attitudes of young people using edularps as an educational method. We focused especially on fields of tolerance for differences and on decision-making on important issues of their lives, bearing the consequences of their decisions.

    Project objectives and outputs

Partial objectives of the project

Educational larps

To promote larps as an educational method, which can be used both in formal and nonformal edcuation.

Critical thinking

To develop young people's critical thinking and to encourage them to look at different problematic situations through the eyes of another person.

Strengthen attitudes

To support the strenghting of young people's attitudes throughout continuous work with a concrete experience in edularp as a mean of self-development.

Impact of activities

To increase the impact of the activities of youth organizations and schools on the formation of young people's attitudes.

Methodology for measuring young people's attitudes

We have identified specific attitudes we want to form using larps. With the help of experts from the Research Institute of Child Psychology and Pathopsychology in Slovakia, we created questionnaires for attitudes, in order to identify the entry level of participants within individual topics, as well as to identify their progress after completing the program. We tested the questionnaires in the testing period of larps and follow-up activities.
We needed to find an effectient way to complete, collect, evaluate and compare questionnaires. We have decided to create an online application that will allow the questionnaires to evaluated and compared within each participant.

Application, we call Bethy, works on these principles:

1.Questionnaires use scales and semantic differential to measure attitudes.
2. The organization or school can create its own account in the application and use these 4 types of questionnaires according to the topic. Questionnaire are available in 4 language versions - Slovak, Czech, English and Estonian.
3. The participant fills in the questionnaire upon entering the program and after its completion. Application then pairs and evaluates the shift within each participant.
4. The displayed results for the school / organization can be interpreted from the perspective of the group / class or individuals. However, results are anonymized, so the participants can freely express their point of view.
5. The results can be further worked with, the application can make comparison according to gender, age or between groups.

We have created eight edularps related to current topics in our societies, as well as current topics addressed by young people in our countries. The educational goals of edularps were based on our definition of needs and we thematically focused on four different areas: decision-making, differences, ideologies, addictions.

Eight edularps methodologies

We piloted edularps on groups of young people in both non-formal and formal education. Testing took place in our organizations as well as in associated organizations. In all three countries, there were 1,006 young people aged 13-30 years old and 110 youth workers involved in larp testing and follow-up activities.
For each edularp, a comprehensive material has been created containing a promo video, a detailed methodological description - the larp’s objective, educational output, reflection, the legend to the game, descriptions of characters and its relationships and other materials for the game itself, including follow-up activities.
We have created a web portal www.larxperience.com, where reviews, complete materials for the introduction of games and for the implementation of follow-up activities can be found.

Methodology of forming attitudes of young people

We have developed a comprehensive methodology for shaping attitudes in non-formal and formal education. We relied mainly on our previous experience and knowledge from testing of the programs.

Introduction of edularps and leading the reflection

The first part of the methodology deals with larps as a method of education and dealing with experience. The methodology contains the basic principles of using larps in education, descriptions of the principles of introduction, the principles of mental safety of participants and the whole process of leading the reflection.
The second part of the methodology is devoted to the formation of attitudes and their measurement.
The entire larxperience.com portal serves as a methodology for forming attitudes using edularps, and at the same time as a space for methodological materials for all 8 edularps with follow-up activities.

Dissemination larp conference for youth workers and teachers

In each participating country we held a conference on edularps in order to disseminate the project outcomes

Personal experience with edularp

In addition to the presentation of the project and its outputs, the participants gained personal experience from playing edularp - this is the way to show them the real potential of edularps. Holding the conference on larps enabled us to extend this method to other schools and youth organizations and to attract new people interested in this topic. For better comprehensibility, we organized conferences in national languages, and we sent invitations to all youth organizations and schools in our regions, as well as to our national collaborating partners. Each country prepared the conference program separately depending on the specific needs of its target groups.

Training activities

Training - Larp as educational method

We designed the program the way that participants could get acquainted with the full range of related issues, starting at formation of attitudes, ending at specific larps. The participants experienced the activities on themselves, because we have observed that when they experience it themselves, they are then more motivated to implement this methods in their work.

day one

Arrival, getting to know each-other, introduction teambuilding activities, acquaintance with the training objective, setting up the educational process, collecting expectations and concerns, introduction to the topic of young people's attitudes.

day two

Playing a larp "Game with fire", reflection of the game, a link to the topic of forming attitudes, an introduction to the topic of larps - an introduction to what larps are, what their principles are, how they work, competencies and their interconnection to larps.

day three

How to use larps in education, a detailed look at the larps and its individual components (mechanics, characters, rules), the methodology of introducing larps, leading reflections and training on specific activities.

day four

Ethics and safety of participants, preparation for the introduction of games (participants were divided into three groups and each group planned to launch one larp game, including reflection - the remaining group that was not involved in the presentation, played the game), feedback on larp introduction.

day five

Introducing larp (continuation of activity from previous day), how to use follow-up activities with the principles of experiential pedagogy in order to strengthen attitudes.

day six

Presentation of all created project outputs, plan of implementation, evaluation of educational outputs, training conclusion.
